July 23, 2018
‘Janani Sewa’ as a service to cater to the food requirements of mothers for their babies was announced in the annual railway budget of the year 2016-17. This term can be translated as: service for women and interestingly the word has Sanskrit origins meaning mother.
‘Janani Sewa’ has been implemented primarily to meet the needs of mothers to procure baby food at the railway stations conveniently. This would enable the mothers to get essentials such as hot water, hot milk and baby food.
This facility has been made available at all the major railway stations of India including New Delhi, Mumbai Central, Howrah, Chennai, Nagpur, Pune, Surat, Lucknow and Moradabad. The menu decided for children is also made available through e-catering service.
This is a recent initiative by Indian Railways to cater to the demands of baby food for the railway commuters travelling with babies. The idea of this program was induced when a mother had tweeted a grievance/feedback over the unavailability of milk for infants. This initiative had been made operational since the previous year.
