Hamleys has started its store in Thrissur, Kerala which is the second for the Indian state and the very first for the city. The store is located at Sobha City Mall, Puzhakkal, which is a shopping destination built on 4.7 acres land with a super built up area of more than 600,000 square feet. Thrisuur is the third largest city in Kerala after Cochin and Calicut and the 20th largest in India. Interestingly, the city is also known as the “cultural capital of Kerala” because of a rich cultural legacy.
The retail brand has established its presence across about 35 cities in the country with more than 80 stores. There has been a significant expansion of the brand in Tier-II & III cities especially, primarily due to abundant opportunities of growth of retail sector in these markets which are yet to be explored to their full potential.
In May, it was officially announced that Reliance Retail has acquired 100 per cent shares of Hamleys Global Holdings Limited. The Mukesh Ambani-led Reliance Industries has bought the 259-years old British toy retailer for INR 620 crores in an all-cash deal. With the tagline ‘the finest toy shop in the world’, Hamleys enjoys a massive market presence around the globe. It was founded by William Hamley in the year 1760 as “Noahs Ark” in London and is one of the oldest and largest toys retailers. The company has its presence in 25 countries around the world.
